Tee Ball on the South Lawn: A Salute to the Troops Game

Tee Ball on the South Lawn: A Salute to the Troops Game

In 2001, President Bush launched Tee Ball on the South Lawn to encourage fitness among America’s youth and promote our national pastime to people of all ages. On Sunday, September 7, 2008, after eight great seasons, the President hosted the 20th and final game of his presidency.

Sunday’s game honored a special group of Little Leaguers -- the children of active-duty military personnel. We are all grateful to our military for sacrificing their time and comfort to keep us safe here at home. President and Mrs. Bush also appreciate the sacrifices of our military families, including today’s players, who support their moms and dads in their service to our nation.

There were some special guests on hand to cheer the players on, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, who will serve as the Honorary Commissioner of the game. Former New York Yankees All-Star Bernie Williams will be serving at first base coach with Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Pete Pace coaching at third.

Ambassador Karen Hughes and Steve Keener, President and CEO of Little League International, who have supported the Tee Ball on the South Lawn tradition since the beginning, presented President Bush with the first ball of the game to place on the tee.

And last, but certainly not least, country music stars Rascal Flatts started things off with a performance of the National Anthem. Following the game, guests were invited to enjoy a ballpark-style picnic where Rascal Flatts entertained our guests with a special acoustic concert.

As the final tee ball game the President hosted, it was definitely a day to remember.
